Spyware IP list

Edward (152.163.38.227) -

Are there any good lists of IPs that are connected to from spyware?

Ie: a good list to block in my firewall.

No, I am not looking to block adsense, commission junction or other "ad networks".

I want to simply block (and/or detect) attempts by spyware on my system to send messages back to someone.

All this crap about listing cookies as "spyware" is a crock.

There used to be a program called I believe peer gardian that might have helped you out in the past. Whether that is still a project being supported I could not tell you, but you might check it out just the same.

Here is a link to their website.

Here is a list from Phoenix Labs of various IP lists.

It looks like a lot of that focus is against blocking INBOUND TCP/IP traffic.

ie: so you don't see ads and so the RIAA can't access P2P file sharing you have setup.

I think Edward is looking for the opposite. I think he wants to block OUTBOUND TCP/IP traffic (or atleast detect it).

He is worried about programs on his computer that want to connect to the outside world to transmit data to somewhere else.

This would of course be easy for programs that connect to other than port 80 with the http protocol.

What seems to be very dangerous is the quantity of https traffic that seems to originate when you aren't surfing the web. Some of it is windows and virus program updates. But how can you really tell who is being contacted, why and what information is being sent from your computer!

WOW, never thought of looking for blockers for that. But you certainly do have a point there. There are a lot of things that can be transmitted from your computer without you knowing it.

The only thing that I can think of is something like a Spyware blocker that asks if you want to allow a certain link in your computer to access the net. You have the chance to say no, not ever or no just for that instance.

Comment #6 Sam from Net -

I think it is a good idea to put the IP List in your firewall and block them. But I feel it may take some time for these lists to get updated.

So it will not be a bad idea if you configure your firewall in such a way which will check all the incoming/outgoing traffic and take your permission before allowing them.

Comment #7 Sweetness from Earth, the Universe -

Well I just did an update on my Norton virus and it downloaded a firewall at the same time so that you can block both incoming and outgoing or at least get notification of anything that is trying either way.

You can set up a "Rule" to have it specifically block certain things or to be notified of certain things. It goes through a series of 5-6 questions in order to set up this Rule. I think it is great because whenever anything wants to connect to the internet from my computer I am notified and I can say yes, just once or yes all the time or NO NOT EVER.

This is the best blocker I have seen so far and it comes free with Norton Up-date.

Good Luck.

I use Spybot-SD Resident. It works very well. And it notifies me right away.

There are very many for that my friend, but i can give you a list of URL's never to visit because they are sites that install spyware into your PC.

My firewall blocks alot of things. The problem is I don't know if it is important downloads or just spyware. I wish it would give me an explaination of what type of program it is.

Comment #11 Olivia from Online -

Thanks for the list of IP's. I've added them.

It really sucks that the world out there is full of people that are just malicious.

When I run my spyware program it comes up with a long list of spyware items for deletion. It seems thought that many of these are quite innocuous and really don't constitute spyware as such. How does one differentiate between these and actual spyware? Or is it just that because they slow the system down that they should be deleted rather than that they are getting up to any nefarious tricks?
